Parent Support Groups

Raising gifted children can be exciting, rewarding, ... and overwhelming. Their social and emotional needs and cognitive timetables are often wildly out of synch with their peers. It can be difficult to find other parents who understand the particular joys and frustrations posed by these development differences.

SENG parent support groups offer parents the opportunity to connect with other parents of gifted children and learn about the following topics:

This fall, Vanderbilt Programs for Talented Youth offers a SENG-model support group for eight weeks, beginning September 16 and ending November 4.

The meetings will be held Tuesdays from 12:00 to 1:30 pm on the Vanderbilt campus in the Community, Neighborhood, and Government Relations House (2007 Terrace Place) as well as Edmondson Elementary. Participants may bring food and beverage to enjoy during the group session.

The group is facilitated by two experienced counselors with extensive facilitator training in the SENG-model of parent discussion groups, Debora Finch, MSSW, and Barbara Martin, MSSW.

studentsIn order to participate in this group you will need to download the registration form. Please note that registration is limited to the first fourteen applicants. The eight-week group will cost $120 for one guardian. An additional guardian for the same child may participate for a reduced rate of $40.

All participants must have a copy of A Parent's Guide to Gifted Children, by James Webb, et al. You can purchase a copy of this book through our program for $25. Participants will need to read Chapters 1 and 2 on identification and characteristics of gifted children before the first group meeting.

If you are interested in joining a parent support group, please contact Kim Bundy at 615.322.8261 or kim.bundy@vanderbilt.edu for more information.
