Parent Support Groups
Raising gifted children can be exciting, rewarding, ... and overwhelming. Their social and emotional needs and their cognitive and developmental timetables are often wildly out of synch with their peers. It can be difficult to find other parents who understand the particular joys and frustrations.
SENG parent support groups offer parents the opportunity to connect with other parents of gifted children and learn about the following topics:
Identification - Motivation
- Teaching Self-Management
- Intensity and Perfectionism
- Depression
- Communication of Feelings
- Peer Relationships
- Family Relationships
- Establishing Discipline
This fall, Vanderbilt Programs for Talented Youth will be offering a SENG-model support group for parents in both Williamson and Davidson counties.
The meetings will be held on the Vanderbilt campus in the Community, Neighborhood, and Government Relations House (2007 Terrace Place) as well as Edmondson Elementary. Participants may bring food and beverage to enjoy during the group session.
The group is facilitated by two experienced counselors with extensive facilitator training in the SENG-model of parent discussion groups.
The eight-week group will cost $120 for one guardian. An additional guardian for the same child may participate for a reduced rate of $40.
All participants must have a copy of A Parent’s Guide to Gifted Children, by James Webb, et al. You can purchase a copy of this book through our program for $25. Participants will need to read Chapters 1 and 2 on identification and characteristics of gifted children before the first group meeting.
If you are interested in joining a parent support group, please contact Kim Bundy at 615.322.8261 or kim.bundy@vanderbilt.edu for more information.
