Fall 2009 Weekly SAVY Course Updates

The Saturday Academy provides a dynamic, fast-paced curriculum experience to qualifying gifted children in grades K–6. Master teachers trained in gifted education implement an accelerated, research-based curriculum for all SAVY courses. This program meets six consecutive Saturdays each fall and spring. Students can also attend SAVY in the summer, enrolling for one or two weeks.
SAVY At A Glance:
Who? Gifted students in kindergarten through 6th grade who typically test at the 95th percentile and above on either verbal or nonverbal sections of academic achievement or ability tests. See "Eligibility" section below for more information on student qualification.
What? Small weekend and summer classes designed for the exceptionally talented and motivated learner. Students choose one course for the entire session. Class size is limited to approximately 12 students for K-2 classes, and approximately 15 students for grades 3-6. A trained, master teacher and teaching assistant lead all classes.
When? Spring and fall classes will be held six Saturday mornings in a row, from 9:00 to 11:30 AM. Summer classes are held Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 11:45 AM.
Where? Depending upon the session, classes will be held either on Vanderbilt University's Peabody campus or at University School of Nashville, on the corner of 21st Avenue and Edgehill Ave.
Eligibility: Most standardized achievement or ability tests are accepted. These include but are not limited to: MAT, CogAT, TCAP, ERB, Terra Nova, Stanford Achievement Test, OLSAT, Woodcock Johnson, Stanford Binet, and WISC. Students without test scores should work with their school or a local independent testing center for assessment. Although not endorsed or affiliated with Vanderbilt University or Programs for Talented Youth, Learning Matters, a nonprofit agency in the Nashville area, offers eligibility screening for a fee. Visit their website at www.learningmattersinc.org for more information. Be sure to mention SAVY so the appropriate screening instruments will be used. Cost: $400 tuition includes six classes, classroom materials, and two SAVY Chat lectures for parents. All applicants need to submit a non-refundable application fee of $25. Limited, need-based financial assistance is available.
Application: Students are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are available online. If you are not on our mailing list and would like to have a brochure mailed to you, please visit the "Contact Us" page of our website to enter your contact information.
Classes For Parents: All parents of SAVY students may attend the SAVY Chats, held the first and last Saturday of SAVY, while children are in class. Led by local and national experts, these lectures are designed to provide information about the unique needs of gifted children and include practical applications for parents. For those parents who are interested in a more conversational experience, a SENG (Social-Emotional Needs of Gifted) discussion group may be appropriate. For a nominal fee of $50 parents may attend a parenting group, led by licensed and trained counselors, while their children are in SAVY classes. A registration form will be included with each student's letter of acceptance.
