Residential Life

Vanderbilt Summer Academy isn’t only about
the academic experience. We believe that life
outside the classroom is just as important as
what goes on inside. Each weekday you will
participate in your choice of an Arête class, and every evening you will be
able to choose from a whole range of activities
such as games, movies, sports, and off-campus outings. In addition, time is built into the schedule to allow plenty of opportunities to unwind and socialize with your new friends. Not only will you have the chance to get a taste of life on a college campus, but you will also get to sample some of the many cultural and entertainment offerings of Nashville.

Housing

Stambaugh House, on the new Commons, will
be your “home away from home” at VSA. This
building opened in fall 2007 and combines the
best of modern conveniences within a graciously classic exterior. This centrally air-conditioned House includes laundry facilities on the first floor and vending machines for snacks. Living in Stambaugh House will give you a sneak peek into Vanderbilt’s Commons experience for first-year students. To learn more, visit http://commons.vanderbilt.edu.
Our carefully selected and trained proctors will be on hand to supervise the residence hall
and to guide students in evening and weekend activities. Proctors, who are Vanderbilt students,
will reside on each floor near their proctor group of ten to fifteen students. Proctor groups are
separated by gender, and there are four single-sex, communal bathrooms on each floor.

Dining

Summer Academy students will eat most of
their meals in the new Commons Center, which offers a wide variety of healthy and savory selections including vegetarian and vegan options. All meals served in the Commons Center or at Summer Academy-wide events are covered in the tuition. The Commons Center also sells espresso and snacks during the day. Outside dining experiences, such as snacks or ice cream,
will be the responsibility of the student.

Safety and Health

The Vanderbilt Summer Academy staff recognizes the importance of proper health and
safety for everyone in our program. Our trained staff lives in the residence halls, supervises
activities, and maintains the overall well-being and safety of students during the program. The
Summer Academy residence hall houses only program participants and Vanderbilt staff. All
students are provided with keys to their dorm rooms in order to allow them to secure their
belongings.

Because Vanderbilt Summer Academy is an opportunity to experience a taste of college life,
some of the responsibility for health and safety will rest with you. All students will be informed
of the program guidelines for behavior and campus boundaries in the Vanderbilt Summer
Academy Student Guide. All rules are designed to foster a healthful, respectful environment
where everyone can find success and enjoyment. We work closely with Vanderbilt's Student Health Center to ensure the safety and health of all students.
