Summer SAVY 2019: Session 1, Day 1 – Archaeology 101 (Rising 3rd/4th)

Posted by on Monday, June 10, 2019 in Grade 3, Grade 4, SAVY.

Today for the first day of class we met new friends and were introduced to the basics of modern archaeology. In addition to learning new vocabulary words, students studied how to conduct an archaeological survey. Setting up their own x and y axes in Hank field, students spent the late morning and early afternoon conducting their own mock survey. They documented artifact clusters and labeled and bagged them according to type. Students also learned about social systems and iconography. In small groups, they made their own coil ceramic vessels and designed a iconographical symbol to represent their group.

It was a fast first day together but I am looking forward to the rest of the week! Tomorrow we’ll be conducting our own excavation and exploring stratigraphy!
